Welcome to the Diamond State Rodeo Association website! March 28, 2012: DSRA mourns the loss of our friend, Avery Nugent.
Avery A. Nugent lost his life to kidney cancer on March 28, 2012. He was born in Columbus, Indiana on September 19, 1956 and was the son of Estel and Mary Johnson Nugent. He is survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and preceded in death by his parents, Uncle George Johnson and step-sister Jeannie. Growing up in Indiana, he attended St. Peter’s Lutheran School and South Decatur High School. In 1974, he joined the Navy and served at Pearl Harbor. Avery loved his model train, bacon frying and huge pancakes. On Sunday afternoons, the whole family would make a “keg of nails” (home-made ice cream in Indiana). Avery and his family were huge Cincinnati Red fans, loved taking lots of road trips and watching the Madison Regatta boat races. Avery lived in many of the Midwestern states but finally landed in Little Rock about six years ago. He was a truck driver and was employed by Estes Express Lines. Avery met and bonded with many and shared his humor and wit. He will be missed by his soul mate, Shawn Blackburn, friends of DSRA and other family of kind. A memorial service was held on April 1, 2012, at 3 pm at 610 Center, 610 Center St., Little Rock, Arkansas.
